How a Lidar sees the world
Comments
In this video we see a visualization of the point cloud created by a Lidar.
The Velodyne VLP-16 Lidar scans the world around the Sharx Robotics Carter V1 robot with 16 simultaneous laser beams. Unlike a picture or video where each pixel has only color information, every single dot in a Lidar's point cloud has the precise distance measurement embedded in it, allowing the Nvidia software to create a map of its environment.
This sample video is provided courtesy of Velodyne Lidar and Exyn Data. Sharx robots use the data generated by the Lidar directly without the need to format the data into a human viewable video file. But it can definitely be fun to use Velodyne’s Veloview software to visualize the data and see how a robot perceives the world around it.
